Unplugged In Moab Ep 8: Our Family Adventure Through Little Wild Horse Canyon And Final Trip Stats!
Come join us while we go camping in our all electric solar powered RV in Utah. In the eighth and last episode of our Unplugged In Moab Trip we explore Little Wild Horse Canyon until the wind kicks up and we get out of that dust storm and head home at the conclusion of our 10 day adventure through the Moab area of Utah! For this entire trip we drove 897 miles which consumed 105.67 gallons of gas which cost us $450.97 at an average Miles Per Gallon of 8.5. The most expensive gas was unsurprisingly just north of Moab at $4.77 per gallon and the cheapest was $3.89 after we got home.

      This trip was recorded with the DJI Osmo Pocket 1, Insta360 X2, and a little from my cell phone Galaxy S21 Ultra. Now days I'm recording with a Osmo Pocket 3 which is a huge improvement over my prior Osmo Pocket, but the other two cameras are still current cameras I use. I also use a DJI Action 3, and Sony a6600 in some situations. I would put cameras in more creative locations more often, but I'm always balancing getting good shots while recording the event vs being present with my family which is a difficult balance.

      @@Familyadventure369Yes I agree most certainly family is more important than making UA-cam videos. The reality is before I was making UA-cam videos I was actually filming videos much the same as I do now I just would archiving on my hard drive and nobody ever saw it including myself. I much prefer making UA-cam videos because it gives me the motivation to take the time to edit it into something and watchable that my family can enjoy as well as others. I do film more than I would if I wasn't making a UA-cam video and I also explain what is going on where I wouldn't if I was just recording random family home videos. Overall it's better family home videos the way I do it because in the future I might very well be forgetful of what the trip was like and I appreciate the explanation of what's going on even though I was there but probably have forgotten.

    Have you thought about to get water from a/c and dehumidifier?

    • @ElectricTechAdventures
      @ElectricTechAdventures 4 дні тому

      Yes I've tested that ability by putting a bucket under the condensate drain while we're camped and using the AC heavily. I have my results in an upcoming video while we're camped. Since we're typically in the dry desert there's not a whole lot of humidity to harvest. I've had roughly 3-9 cups of water overnight in a couple different places. One of these days I'll likely take the trailer to a more humid climate then I'll test it again.

    I have a 2015 S 85D. After about 3 months I find as I found initially the new chip and radio upgrade for $2700 provided a stronger radio signal. Changing from 21 inch tires to 19 inch tires was a better change. However, the change is done. My computer on wheels runs and the Tesla remote service is great. I like my sunroof. Then, just a real radio with the stations I want would be an improvement, too.

    Hi, info you provided is great. Did you keep the S, transfer the free charging to the Y and paid 3k when you picked up Y?

    • @ElectricTechAdventures
      @ElectricTechAdventures 16 днів тому

      Yes we still have and drive the Model S locally. Any trip that requires supercharging we take our Y. I'm also doing an experiment right now where I'm exclusively charging our S from our RV solar panels, so when the S doesn't have enough charge for the drive we want to do I use the Y as backup in that situation as well. Yes, we transferred free supercharging to the Y and the employees told us we'd be able to transfer AND get the inventory discount so we ordered a Model Y in Vegas because it had the cheapest price. Then when we got there to pick it up they wouldn't give us the inventory discount so we had to pay the difference or walk away. In hindsight we should have walked away from the deal and waited because just a month or two later Tesla was offering the supercharger transfer WITH inventory discounts. They totally screwed us over, so we're exclusively supercharging the Y to get our money back which is going to take 30-40k miles probably.

    How did you make the backward seats in the truck of the s? Couldn’t you just do that to the cyber truck?

    • @ElectricTechAdventures
      @ElectricTechAdventures 16 днів тому

      The rear facing seats in the Model S was an option from the factory when our S was made. That option has since been discontinued. The bed of the Cybertruck doesn't have any climate control for occupants. Seats would obviously subtract from the cargo space, and also if we filled the rest of the truck bed with cargo (who wouldn't?) then if you got in an accident the bed would be a dangerous place to be with flying projectiles. Since all we need is one additional seat I'm much more likely to remove the center console and figure out how to add an after market jump seat there. Ultimately I'm holding off for now not just due to the lack of 6 seats, but also due to the super poor towing range that others have been reporting, as well as the $20k price premium being charged right now. When Tesla drops the Foundation Series pricing and adds a 6th seat then we'll have to revisit the Cybertruck choice. In the meantime I'm waiting and considering other options like various used diesel trucks in our local classifieds. I'd consider the Silverado EV if it wasn't so expensive and it also doesn't seat 6. I like the idea of the 2025 Ramcharger, but it's not available yet and there's a lot of details yet unknown such as will it seat 6? When we purchased our current Ford F-250 in 2021 it was with the expectation that we'd be getting the Cybertruck in a year, or maybe two at the max. Well...we were way wrong, or rather Tesla did a terrible job setting or re-clarifying expectations. We're now 3 years into our Ford ownership with no end in sight. I am grateful though that it does technically work for our needs and we just barely got back from a camping trip yesterday in it pulling our trailer successfully. It's just painfully gutless and expensive to operate. Granted yes it was way cheaper to purchase than any new truck. Right now I don't know what the future will bring and I'm just kind of ignoring the situation until our current truck completely dies or options open on the truck market with 6 seats.

    • @ElectricTechAdventures
      @ElectricTechAdventures 16 днів тому

      Oh, then there's the range extender that Tesla has said the Cybertruck will have available someday for $16k. Again, a future option, and I don't make decisions now based on future promises. Plus I don't like the idea of paying that much more money to get an already $10k more expensive truck for less than promised range. Meaning we were promised 500+ miles of range for $70k and with the range extender Tesla is now saying we can get 460 miles of range for $96k. That's really expensive AND I'd lose a bunch of bed space and payload capacity.

    • @majormajor6016
      @majormajor6016 16 днів тому

      Whoa you got a free car or more like a huge discount on the Y. You got it for around 3k. I also wanted to to ask what years were free super charging? How did you figure out it had free charging when you bought the car used?

    • @ElectricTechAdventures
      @ElectricTechAdventures 16 днів тому

      Free transferable supercharging for life of the vehicle was on all Model S' through 2015 and then in 2016 if I remember right they switched over to a structure where it was free supercharging only for the first owner. My goal had been to purchase a 2015 so I didn't need to concern myself with whether or not it had it because they all did. It was a couple of months after we purchased our Model S in May of 2019 that test the began to strip free supercharging out of trade-in vehicles so now is far less certain that a vehicle will have it. That is obviously super sad and maddening. Nowadays if you are shopping for a used Tesla you have to look at the features screen in the car to see if it says it has free supercharging. I'm not totally sure where to find the actual back end code in their database but SC01 is the code that you want to verify that it has which means that it is transferable to another owner. If it is SC05 then it is not transferable. If you buy the car private party then it will transfer but if you buy it directly from Tesla then it will certainly not have free supercharging so make sure not to buy one from Tesla directly.

      There were no bugs when we were there on this trip and other trips when we've been there. Perhaps it's drier out in the dispersed camping area vs I assume you stayed in the campground? I highly recommend camping in the dispersed camping area. I've heard the BLM sold it to the state of Utah and I imagine they'll turn the area into a campground eventually effectively ruining it for us sadly. We'll keep visiting when we can until then though.

    There has got to be a way to automate the charge settings with something like home assistant so you can follow the solar output, adjust the charge level so you stay within a minimum/maximum state of charge on the RV battery or whatever other parameters you use to decide the charge level rather than having to check the app every hour or so to adjust the charge setting manually

      I know that Tesla's API supports changing the charging amps, but I haven't looked into Victron's API to see what options there are. I would like to into it more, but I'm so busy editing UA-cam videos that I haven't decided to spend any more time on trying to automate it. Also I'm not a computer programmer, so it would take me even more time to figure out how to do it. I don't check the system hourly though. More like 4-5 times per day because I've been doing it long enough I can see what the weather is doing and I generally know if the Tesla is pulling a certain number of amps how quickly that'll effect the charge state of the trailer battery bank vs the solar production. I'd love to automate it someday though and I'm all ears if anyone else figures it out before I spend anymore time on it.

    Thanks for posting your trip. My family and I are just about to embark on a cross-country trip from MA to Yellowstone on Monday. I'm taking our 2013 Model S P85. Your 2015 supercharges at the same rate as mine, with it taking somewhat longer than estimated, and the charge rate tapering off quickly. We took a trip to TN in 2017, and the charge rate was much faster and didn't taper much until about 65%. But Tesla sadly nerfed the older 85 battery packs in 2019. Makes travel take a bit longer, but the free supercharging is still nice. I agree with you: family road trips as a blast in the Tesla. I just miss the faster speeds we used to enjoy. I was a little nervous heading into the park to explore, but your video confirmed what I hoped regarding the slow travel speed and better efficiency. We're staying in Gardiner and at the Old Faithful Inn, where there is some limited L2 charging, and then spending a couple nights in Jackson at Grand Teton, where there is a supercharger. I'm hoping the charging won't be an issue while we're staying in the park.

      That's awesome, I'm glad you're enjoying your Model S on road trips! We certainly loved taking ours on road trips, and I say past tense because we recently transferred our free supercharging to a Model Y and it's now our road trip car. This spring we took our Model Y on our first long distance road trip going from Utah to Key West Florida and back. It was 7,168 miles over 22 days and I'll be publishing a video series of that road trip once I can get through my editing backlog. It performed great and the supercharging is significantly faster, obviously specifically at V3 superchargers. We still have our Model S and we use it regularly around town, but any trip that requires supercharging we obviously always take our Y.

      I ordered 5 panels from SanTan Solar and they never mentioned a 10 panel minimum, so either that's a new policy or they disregarded it perhaps because these panels are much larger than their normal panels. The panels bolted to the unistrut have been rock solid with zero movement. I've checked the bolts a couple times to ensure they stay tight. I have not noticed a difference in driving performance towing the trailer with the panels on the roof. I expect it's probably hurting my gas mileage a little bit, but I have no idea how much since I used a different truck prior to the panels vs after.

      Pricing agreements with utility providers vary dramatically around the world. In my case as well as my neighbors we pay a flat $10 per month and the grid serves as our battery. Every kWh we push into the grid we can later pull out of the grid at no cost to us until our March bill of every year where if we have a credit on our net metering account then we lose it. They do not compensate us for any excess electricity at the end of every year.

    • @virtual-viking

      @@virtual-viking Our net metering agreement is grandfathered in until 2035. My expectation is that by then batteries will be cheap enough that it'll make sense to add those to our system to self consume as much as possible so as to transact with the grid as little as possible. But then again that decision will be effected by what the net metering policy is in 2035. We'll consider the factors at that point in time. Our solar panels have already produced enough value in energy produced that they've paid for their installation costs as of mid-2023. Now going forward we're driving for free on the sun, and we're also partially heating our home with the excess solar electricity in the winter which last winter halved our natural gas bill.

I'm afraid the original Cybertruck unveiling was over promised and under delivered. We'll all be super excited if we're ever able to get one, but I have other concerns which are mainly towing range. I'm considering trying out the Cybertruck for a year, then perhaps getting a Ramcharger hybrid with 690 miles of rated range when they're available to buy. At this point we're just waiting to see what the companies offer and once any company sells a 6 seat version of an electric truck or hybrid with 6 seats and longer towing range (a good towing range is 200+ miles, and ideally more) then we'll get that.

How well does the Talaria crawl up trails at a slower pace? I'm in Alaska and very Talaria curious. The light curb weight of these e-moto's is appealing, and I could charge the bike off my truck camper battery system as I'm driving between camping spots. Subscribed. Thanks.

      I was in sport mode the entire day if I remember right, and I think I probably stated that somewhere in the video. On the following bike ride documented here ua-cam.com/video/DVcayUs_P8w/v-deo.html I experimented with using eco mode primarily and I've found it to be sufficient for a lot of terrain, but there are times I have to switch to sport to get enough torque to get up an obstacle. Luckily the ability to switch between modes is very easy. I just have to stop twisting the throttle, hit the mode button, then twist the throttle again and the mode is switched. The Talaria is fantastic for crawling up trails at slow speeds. I've taken my young kids on bike rides and I'm able to just slowly roll along at their speed and it uses very little energy to do that and it's effortless compared to a clutched motorcycle. I love taking our Talaria on the back of our camper then use it to explore the are where we're camped and I charge my Talaria from my RV's solar power generation. I just did that recently near Capitol Reef National Park but I haven't published that video series yet because I have a video editing backlog. Editing is very time consuming. Thanks for subscribing!

    • @ElectricTechAdventures

      Thanks! After making this video, starting in 2023 I decided I was protecting the temperature of the batteries more than needed at 90 degrees F so I raised my upper limit to 110 degrees F and over the entire summer of 2023 there was never once a time when the batteries exceeded 110 so I've basically stopped using the mini split when the trailer is parked. That kind of negates this video, but this video was still potentially relevant if we had more extreme temperatures where we live. I've found I also don't need the heating in the winter because the energy in and out of the batteries plus their thermal mass is able to withstand the overnight lows and keep the battery above freezing, and technically the limit is 25 degrees F. If it got hotter or colder where we live then the content of this video is still relevant for sure. Instead though I'm using the generated power for charging my Tesla as I talked about in the video and now more of that solar energy is more useful to us throughout the year since none of it is going towards the heating or cooling of the trailer.

    • @ourme2
      @ourme2 28 днів тому

      Over in the High Desert in California there’s at least 5 months when the temperature is above 100F, and at least 4 months when it dips below 30F, so I’ll for sure be keeping the AC/heat on at least for a few hours to fend off the extreme temperatures, I think sacrificing a heat pump in the long run to keep everything inside the RV in good shape is a decent trade off. I may also buy an EV later. Cheers

  • @parkcitymacs
    @parkcitymacs 28 днів тому

    This was a great video. I get why you did what your did. It so so insane the RV industry keeps putting heavy AC units on roofs. As an engineer, I have found most off-the-shelf RV EV (Lipo) solutions lack design and function as well as complexity to hook up. After building some custom trailers myself, I decided to go with an EcoFlow system in our Lance Trailer with great success. Amazing results actually. One thing that frustrates me is slow charging times of RV controllers. The raw lithium batteries can not handle 2000Watts per Lipo so it takes forever if you do charge from Gas. The Ecoflow system also eliminates the need a controller and permanent wiring but allows huge AMP dumps into the batteries. I ran (2) 110V extension cables run per Battery if not using an additional smart battery out by the shore power connector. That’s all. The END RESULT is I went from a 1600 Watt panel system on my custom trailers to only needing 600Watts on the Lance. I still take a small Honda EU3200I, (yes it fits in the Lance generator storage) which I almost never need to run camping from March to October, in Utah areas. We run the microwave about 10 times a day, coffee maker 6 times a day, theater system with 4K TV , 5 HomePods ( extremely rich on sound and low on power) all in stereo sound, a WI-FI router for the sound, once a night movie, apple computer on all the time, and with a Delta Max and smart Battery we can go 2.5 to 3 days without any sun. With sun we need 5 hours and we can run indefinitely. However, on those times we have to charge, the Ecoflow will charge with 110v, 12V, solar, all input at the same time, so generally 1 to 2 hours of Gas generator gives us 3 days of electric, full 110V for the amount of usage I listed. This gives me a balance of solar and gas if I camp for 3 days or more without sun. We have gone 10 days, on 600 watts of solar, sunny days and been 100 percent charged per day on 600 Watts total solar panels. To eliminate wiring, basically, I trick the Lance trailer into thinking we are on 110V shore power, by using the Ecoflow plugged into the Lance via an extension cord I snaked thru the trailer looped (12 foot 110V to Shore 30amp) into the shore power and likewise one back to charge it. Cost is another big factor. I would say with the Delta Max and Smart battery, extension cables, connectors on the outside of the Lance, solar panels (Flexible taped down), I’m only at $2300 for everything. If I had a larger trailer I would run the Delta Pro and Pro smart battery combo. Another nice thing is my EcoFlow batteries will run the 15,000 BTU AC, but only for 10 to 20 minutes. However, I just plug the Gas Generator in to the ecoflow, so I don’t have to interrupt the shore power from the ecoflow, so during times we run the AC, the ecoflows charge from the sun, and the gas generator, as it powers the AC. Flawless. In the winter, we have to run the gas generator about every 5 days for an hour or so, due to the sun being farther away.

    • @ElectricTechAdventures
      @ElectricTechAdventures 28 днів тому

      Sounds like you have a great system there. What I also like about using something like the EcoFlow is you could easily take it elsewhere and leave the trailer behind whereas my system is tied to the trailer. There's lots of options out there for various price points and pros/cons. I'm just glad to see innovation because far too many people are just using the default tech from the RV manufacturers which is a comparatively terrible experience. I'm guessing you don't use your system much for cooling right? It sounds like you're going long periods without much external input which makes sense if you're powering relatively low power draw devices.

    • @parkcitymacs
      @parkcitymacs 28 днів тому

      @@ElectricTechAdventures Ya, we do that. For example, if I just take my Bike to a motocross track, I take a Dometic cooler and one of the ecoflows. Probably overkill, but it’s nice to have dry frozen ice in 100 degree temps. Regarding cooling, our Lance is a 1685, and the AC unit is way over kill. We can run it for 5 to 10 min maybe in the evenings off of the EcoFlow and it cools it down for the night and enough power to run the next day. It’s funny but we won’t own anything but a 4 seasons camper, due to the sound dampening and insulation in the summer versus a winter demand. When we camp in 95F or higher temps we are outside (or in the water) most of the hot time so we don’t run the AC much. IF we do,then pound for pound it’s not realistic to use Lithium batteries versus gasoline. I like the batteries and solar so I don’t ever need to listen to a gas generator for a microwave (1800 Watts) or coffee maker (2,300 watts), which I can run at the same time, many times for a day. We also run a small vacuum which is about 1200 watts, and an electric pressure washer (1500 watts) . The black tank has only been used for freshwater, so I have a direct connector to the pressure washer to wash the truck and trailer if we have been on dusty roads, or washing motocross bikes, or an extremely muddy dog at times. So if you add all those up we have some pretty demanding usages for a few days. AC for more than 2 hours we would use gas generator.

    Power from solar panels is not "free" - ever. Solar panels themselves are not free and they will not last "forever". Plus they need maintenance and they do break and fail on occasions. It would be like paying for multi-thousands of dollars of gasoline in a tank out back and then saying fuel from the tank was "free" after the fact. Solar isn't free even when you break even with installation costs because you need to be saving up for the upcoming replacement costs which will be significant. Of course you could move before you do a solar replacement in the same way EV owners can sell their car before it needs a battery replacement. That said, it is still not free and somebody is going to have to pay for batteries and/or solar panels at some point and that should always be factored into long term costs. EV owners see this with vehicle deprecation when they sell but homeowners never seem to want to address this.

    • @ElectricTechAdventures
      @ElectricTechAdventures 29 днів тому

      As I talked about in this video ua-cam.com/video/m_UNWLxNehU/v-deo.html my solar panels have broken even on their installation costs. The total cost of installation (zero maintenance so far) was $9,735.31. As of yesterday the solar panels have produced 97,620.89 kWh. At 11 cents per kWh (average where I live) the panels have produced $10,738 in value. Or multiply by whatever retail rate for electricity you'd like. At this point in time (May 27th 2024) my panels have produced $1,003 more than they cost to install. There is likely going to be some maintenance costs like replacing the inverter once over the lifespan of the solar array (25 year production warranty on panels, 12 year warranty on the inverter), and when the time comes that I need to spend money on replacing components I'll add that to the installation costs. Only when the entire solar array has been removed/replaced will it be possible to calculate the exact price per kWh over the lifespan of the solar array. Saying solar energy is "not free" in the midst of the lifespan of the system is not helpful. What is helpful is adding up the installation/maintenance costs and subtracting the ongoing monetary value of the produced electricity. In my case I've had zero maintenance costs since the installation went online August 2017 so I am truly getting free electricity from the sun. Is it possible that some component fails today or in the near future that costs more than $1,003 to replace? You bet. Maybe I'll even go negative again, but every day I get more energy going towards my "free energy" calculation. Over the expected lifespan of my system (August 2042 is when the solar panels and inverter will be out of warranty) the panels will have paid for themselves 4 times! (I calculated that by dividing 9131.25 which is the number of days over 25 years by 2244 which was the number of days it took my system to break even.) It's likely the system will continue operating past that point, or perhaps not; only time will tell.

      "won in the stock market" is the understatement of your comment! That's a good example of one of the many possibilities for money (investing vs buying tangible goods or services) and how we have to choose what to do with our own money. In hindsight I can easily recount many instances in my life where if I'd done something different with my money (such as invest in Nvidia, Amazon, Tesla stock etc...) I could have much more money than I do now. Some of those choices I do regret, but at the same time if all I did was invest that money I'd have more instances of losses in the stock market potentially and I'd have far less fond memories and experiences that I've gained through carefully choosing where to spend my money for the benefits I value. I don't recommend that most people buy a brand new car and I personally never thought I would and only did so to achieve the free supercharging transfer.
